Frequently Asked Questions & Fun Facts
What's the most common misconception people have about spray tans?
The most common misconception about spray tans is that they always turn you orange. This *can* happen if the DHA (the active ingredient) concentration is too high for your skin tone, or if the formula is low-quality or applied incorrectly. But if done right, a spray tan should look natural, not orange.
Besides avoiding water and tight clothes, what's one surprising thing people should do (or not do) to extend the life of their tan?
Avoid bar soap and switch to a pH-balanced, sulfate-free body wash.
WHY?
Regular bar soap or harsh body washes (especially ones with sulfates) can strip your skin’s natural oils and accelerate fading. They mess with your skin’s pH, which can cause the tan to break down unevenly or flake.
The tan only colors the top layer of your skin.
Spray tans don’t penetrate past the stratum corneum—that’s the topmost layer of dead skin cells. Which means as soon as your skin naturally exfoliates (about every 5–10 days), your tan goes with it. That’s why exfoliating before your tan and not after is rule #1.
Your pH levels can affect the color.
If your skin is too acidic or alkaline, the tan may turn greenish or orange. That’s why some pros use pH-balancing sprays before the actual tanning solution. Bonus tip: Deodorants, lotions, and perfumes can mess with your skin's pH too, so skip those the day of your tan.
Your tan can develop differently depending on the weather.
Hot, humid days can speed up your body’s sweating, which may interfere with the DHA setting and lead to streaks or patches—especially during the first few hours after application. Cold, dry weather, meanwhile, can make skin flakier, so moisturizing is extra important in winter. Spray tan performance isn't just about your skin—it’s about your climate too.
Your skin type affects how your tan develops.
People with dry skin may find their spray tan develops unevenly or fades faster. That’s because dry patches absorb DHA more intensely, leading to dark spots or blotches. On the flip side, oily skin can make the tan develop lighter or fade quickly. Hydrated, exfoliated skin = smooth, even results.
The bronzer isn’t the actual tan.
Many spray tans contain a temporary cosmetic bronzer that gives you instant color. This is not the actual DHA tan, and it washes off in the shower. So don’t panic if you look way lighter after your first rinse—the real tan will be there underneath.
Do spray tans can help cover skin imperfections?
Because they darken the skin tone slightly and even out the surface, spray tans can camouflage light scars, stretch marks, veins, and mild discoloration. They don’t erase them—but they make them less noticeable.
